The Culture of "Tipping"
Calling all travelers!
Lets start of by figuring out what is tipping, or what most of us refer to as "tip". This is something you give to the waiter, hair dresser, taxi drivers and all those who will give you service. I know you got it right from the moment i mentioned the keyword: waiter. We are pinoy, we can communicated through keywords.
Now, most of us is only concerned with one thing, when and when not to give tip? We will discuss that a little later but we have to read some trivia about the word, for a change.
Can you believe that the term tip is not so Pinoy? Yes, like we always do, we have copied it from other culture.
According to Wikipedia (Pinoy's number one source of general information), There is a possibility that the word tip originates from low German word trippen, to tap. I am not pretty sure but i believe that giving tap is a universal gesture to either show sympathy or an alternative to the phrase, "you got it right dude!" Do you think they are connected?
Meanwhile, there is a claim that it has somehting to do with the concept of Judaism. People back then are giving the seller an obligation to "tip the scale" for customers' favor. In Torah, there is a commandment, Nosen lo girumov (give him a tip).
Okay, no matter where this word came from, there is only one clear thing here, this will require you to lessen your travel money. Before, this is a practice, I have never seen my parents missing this part, but as time pass by, less and less people are practicing this. Okay, I admit, i don't always give tip. How can I, the charge is almost often overwhelming enough (defensive).
If you are ask me, the best time to give tip is when you are satisfied with the service. Now, it is not a matter of knowing what is socially accepted, it is a matter of giving favor for people who are working diligently. It is like saying the manong, hey, keep up the good work!
How much?
There is no amount required, it could be as small as 10 pesos as long as it is making you feel good. On my case, i look at the person and if he seems to have a family to raise, then i make sure i am giving him a good amount. If not, i usually cut the amount around 10% of the bill.
